General Summary:
The Library Assistant, under the general direction of the Branch/Department Manager, assists patrons with locating and checking out materials, shelving library materials and other clerical duties. As a Library Assistant, you must demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills, as a great part of this job will involve interacting with the local community.
Responsibilities:

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
- Assist patrons with locating resources and checking out materials.
- Update patron records, place holds on materials and issue library cards.
- Responsible for shelving books and other library materials.
- Must be comfortable proactively seeking out customers to help in all areas of the library (desk, roving, e-mail, phone, or additional methods of communication).
- Perform routine desk duties under professional supervision, help patrons locate and check out materials.
- Responsible assisting the public in the use of technology, including software, online tools, and mobile devices.
- Candidates should be good listeners and communicators, present positive attitude, enjoy working cooperatively as a team member, and place top priority on customer service.
- Must be flexible to assume additional responsibilities and scheduling requirements as needed to meet the coverage needs of the public service desks in other departments.
- Books, boxes, and other library equipment needs to be moved on a regular basis from shelf to shelf and shelf to a mobile cart, some materials may weight up to 50lbs.
- Book drops need to be emptied daily which require the use of a mobile book cart to transport the materials. Book drops contain books and other library materials dropped off by the patron.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of library amenities and the ability to provide information about library policies.
- Ability to use tact, courtesy and good judgement when communicating with coworkers, and the public.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of library materials, both print and electronic.
- Ability to communicate effectively and present ideas orally and in writing.
- Ability to carry out assignments independently and work collaboratively with a team.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- High School graduate or GED equivalent
- 2-years library experience preferred, OR
- Associates degree or higher.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite, with the ability to learn and use new methods and emerging technical advances.
- Must possess excellent customer service skills, ability to get along well with others and to communicate effectively with the public and with library staff, a strong work ethic.

SC Lowcountry & Resort Islands Tourism Commision Visitors Center Manager
The SC Lowcountry & Resort Islands Tourism Commission Visitor Center Manager leads the Commission’s active Frampton House Visitors Center which serves around 20,000 guests per year. Key responsibilities include serving our visitors with information about what to see and do in our four-county region, managing the Visitors Center staff to successfully fulfil the mission of the SC Lowcountry Tourism Commission, managing retail sales and inventory, creating bimonthly newsletters and assisting with social media outlets, bulk mailing and growing revenue and offerings. The position reports directly to the Executive Director in all program requirements. This is primarily a weekday shift from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with an hour break for lunch. Some weekend/afterhours work will be involved.
Responsibilities Include:
- Greeting guests, informing them about the history of the property and surrounding areas and providing them with the information they need. Assures that the Visitors Center is well stocked with travel publications and brochures about the region.
- Supervises staff, including hiring, firing, scheduling and training of weekend staff to ensure that the Center has well-trained, knowledgeable and friendly information specialists.
- Responsible for ordering and maintaining retail stock, consignments and supplies for the Visitors Center’s Gift Shop. Does so in a manner to control expenses. Conducts Year End Inventory counts.
- Prepares Lowcountry Guidebooks for bulk mailings and prepares paperwork for them to be shipped via the US Postmaster.
- Creates bimonthly E-newsletters using information in our website’s calendar of events. Helps to monitor any new events that are in our four-county region in collaboration with the Director of On Line Content. Posts those events on the Events Notice Board.
- Prepares monthly Visitors Center Reports about guest counts, comments and other statistical information. Also reconciles consignment payments monthly.
- Maintains the cleanliness and safety of the Visitors Center for our guests and staff. Reports any repair and/or replacements necessary for equipment, furniture, etc to the Executive Director.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Education/Experience:
- Three to six years or related experience, including retail management, marketing and/or tourism or customer service experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong customer service understanding.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships.
- Proven experience in inventory management.
- Proven ability to manage staff.
- Proficiency with MS Office (MS Word, Excel, Power Point), POS management systems and internet.
- Ability to think critically and work independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to occasionally work weekends/afterhours/travel.
- Knowledge of the Lowcountry Region is a plus.
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds and possess a valid Driver’s License.
Some overnight travel is involved in representing the region at SC Parks, Recreation and Tourism, SCATR, educational or travel show events.
Compensation:
$40,000-$45,000, dependent on qualifications
