Edisto Island is one of South Carolina’s most unique coastal destinations. Our natural beauty, peaceful pace, and close-knit community are what make this place special—and what make it worth protecting.
The Edisto Chamber of Commerce Strategic Plan for a Sustainable Tourism Economy (2024–2030) provides a roadmap for guiding tourism in a way that supports our local businesses, protects our environment, and maintains the quality of life for residents.
Developed with input from more than 115 community leaders, residents, and tourism stakeholders, the plan reflects a shared vision for Edisto’s future.

Our Mission
The Edisto Chamber of Commerce sustains a tourism-based economy by promoting responsible visitation across the island while highlighting our spectacular natural assets.
We work to promote:
- Edisto’s beaches and coastal environment
• Local businesses and experiences
• Parks, recreation, and outdoor activities
• Cultural traditions and community events
At the same time, we advocate for both our business community and the lifestyle residents cherish.
Our Vision
Tourism plays a critical role in Edisto’s economy, but growth must be managed carefully.
Our long-term vision includes:
• Maintaining strong visitation during peak seasons without exceeding capacity
• Increasing visitation during shoulder and off-season months
• Encouraging longer visitor stays
• Increasing visitor spending at local businesses
• Protecting the natural environment
• Maintaining a high quality of life for residents
Our Strategic Priorities
The plan focuses on three core initiatives that guide how tourism will evolve on Edisto through 2030.

Smart Marketing of a Coastal Destination
We market Edisto as a unique and authentic coastal island to visitors who value nature, outdoor recreation, and a relaxed pace of life.
Key goals include:
- Maintaining strong summer and holiday visitation
- Increasing travel during slower months (October–March)
- Promoting outdoor recreation such as kayaking, fishing, and boating
- Highlighting local dining, shopping, and events
- Expanding public relations and media coverage of Edisto

Enhancing the Visitor Experience
Visitors come to Edisto for its natural beauty and outdoor lifestyle. Our goal is to continually improve the experiences that make the island special.
Priorities include:
- Diving deeper into what drives visitation via research
- Expanding walking, biking, and paddling opportunities
- Improving signage and wayfinding across the island
- Supporting outfitters, guides, and recreation businesses
- Developing more off-season activities and events
- Increasing accessibility for visitors of all abilities

A Sustainable Tourism Economy
Tourism supports local jobs, businesses, and community services. The Chamber works to ensure the industry remains strong and sustainable.
Key focus areas include:
• Supporting hospitality workforce development
• Advocating for tourism and small business needs
• Strengthening partnerships with local governments
• Supporting Chamber members and community organizations
Measuring Success
To ensure progress, the Chamber will track measurable outcomes including:
• Increased off-season visitation
• Higher visitor satisfaction
• Growth in recreation opportunities and events
• Expansion of tourism-related businesses
• Strong workforce participation in hospitality careers
The strategic plan will be reviewed annually to evaluate progress and adjust priorities when needed.

Current Meetings: Workforce Initiative
Join us for a series of community meetings focused on our Workforce Initiative, one of the most important pieces of Edisto’s future. Together, we’ll explore ways to support local businesses, strengthen our workforce, and ensure we can continue delivering the welcoming, high-quality experience Edisto is known for.
Topics may include workforce availability, housing, training, and long-term sustainability.
